Betting At Roulette
Roulette is a table game. Next to the wheel will be a felt table with a colorful grid representing all of the possible bets. There is an individual square on the board representing each possible number (and color) along with some other betting options. If you place your chips on a number (in that square), you are betting on that number. You can also bet on more than one number at a time through special placement of your bets (if you bet on the line between 1 and 2, you are betting on both numbers). The other positions are called "outside" bets. They represent ranges of bets. You can bet that a red will come up, or an even number, or one of the first twelve numbers (1-12), etc.
The more precise your pick, the more you will win. For instance, if you bet $10 that 23 will win and it does, you will win $350. If you bet $10 that a red number will win, you will win only $10. You also have the opportunity to bet on more than one number with a single bet. If you place your chip on the line between two numbers, you are betting on both and will win if either one of them comes up. Below are a list of the possible bets along with the payout (how much you will win if your choice wins).
-
Single Number Bet - Pays 35 times your bet
Two Number Bet - Pays 17 times your bet
Three Number Bet - Pays 11 times your bet
Four Number Bet - Pays 8 times your bet
Five Number Bet - Pays 6 times your bet
Six Number Bet - Pays 5 times your bet
Twelve Number Bet (1-12, 13-24, or 25-35) - Pays 2 times your bet (except columns which pay 2 times your bet).
Eighteen Number Bet (Red, Black, Odd, Even, 1st 18, or 2nd 18) - Pays 1 times your bet.
You are allowed to place as many bets as you like in each spin. If you wanted to bet on Red, 23, Odd, and 13-24, you could do so. You would be paid individually for each bet that wins.
Roulette, The Odds
There are 38 possible outcomes to each spin of the wheel. It is important to understand that the wheel has no memory of previous spins and therefore each spin is an individual situation and has no bearing on the next spin. Even though the wheel will hit the number 23 on average 1 out of 38 spins, you may have to bet two-hundred times in a row before it hits. It may then hit three times in a row (though unlikely, it happens).
The odds of you winning each type of bet are as follows:
-
One Number Bet - 2.63% or 1:38
Two Number Bet - 5.26% or 1:19
Three Number Bet - 7.89% or 3:38
Four Number Bet - 10.53% or 2:19
Five Number Bet - 13.16% or 5:38
Six Number Bet - 15.79% or 3:19
Twelve Number Bet - 31.58% or 6:19
Eighteen Number Bet - 47.37% or 9:19
Two things that are important to understand. First, many people feel like betting even bets (Red, Black, Odd, Even, 1st 18, or 2nd 18) give you a 50% chance of winning. Because most roulette wheels have 0 and 00 on them (38 possibilities) and 0 and 00 are not considered to be Red, Black, Even, Odd, 1st 18, or 2nd 18, you will lose on any spin where 0 or 00 come up. Thus you have a 47.37% chance of winning an even bet. Same situation goes for the other bets.
Second, the Casino does not pay out based on odds. For example, if you chose 23 and it wins, you will be paid 35 credits even though that bet will only win 1 out of 38 times on average. The casino will pocket the other 3 credits. This brings us to the overall house edge. A casino that has both 0 and 00 on the wheel (most do) has a house edge of 5.26% with an overall payout of 94.74%. If you want to play odds, you should be playing slots or a game with a smaller edge.
I have seen many systems that are based on trends, wheel and dealer biases (uneven wheels or the way the dealer spins is believed to effect the outcome of spins). The practice of watching and recording a series of spins (usually hundreds) is called "clocking the wheel." Many believe that there is no such thing as a biased wheel. Others swear by the position. We have not seen ample evidence for or against this process. You should be forwarned that it takes considerable time and effort to clock a wheel.
Statistically, there is absolutely no way to beat the casino on a per play basis at Roulette. This doesn't mean that you can't win at the game, but you won't do so by simply playing and hoping to win more often than you lose. You can sit down and have a winning session that way, but over the long haul, you will lose. It is our position that the only way to beat the casino is to use a betting strategy and money management.
This means that the casino may win 52.63% of the spins (or more depending on how you bet), but you will win more money on the winning spins than the amount you lose on the losing spins thus resulting in a winning session (having more money than you started with).
